Chapter Seven

The months passed, with frosty silence between husband and wife. Countryside bathed in brilliant summer sunlight. Emma smelled the fresh air around her. The flowers were radiant and beautiful swaying with the wind. Oh the wind, that nice breeze against her face with the wonderful perfume of roses met her nose. She heard the faint sound of chirping above and saw birds soar across the sky. The warm gentle sun shone on her, filling her body with warmth.

Emma made up for the lack of warmth between them by spending all her spare time with Rebecca. When she missed the warmth of his smile, the tender glances he bestowed on her, and his kind words, she fed Rebecca, sang to her, and often relieved the nursemaid so she could bond with the child. Somehow it felt like the little girl knew she needed joy in the midst of her pain. Emma sang her to sleep at night, played with her when she was awake, and often sat, just watching her sleep.

Being with Rebecca helped heal her wounded pride. At least one person in the household cared about her, or at the very least, did not pity or despise her. The little girl soon recognised her, and cooed when she arrived and took her from the nurse. She let all her unrequited feelings for her husband loose on the baby.
